A hand starts with hole cards and a preflop betting round. The flop adds three community cards. The turn adds a fourth; the river adds the fifth.
There is a betting round after each new street. If all but one player fold, the hand ends immediately. The remaining player does not need to show the winning combination.
If players remain after river betting, showdown compares their best five-card hands.
